August Mover Activity Holds Steady Through Late Summer

Canada recorded 54,194 mover households in August 2026, compared with 53,862 in July.

This represents a 0.6% month-over-month increase, indicating that completed relocation activity remained remarkably stable following the elevated volumes recorded at the beginning of the summer.

August continued to provide a significant opportunity for organizations using a Canadian consumer database to identify and engage new mover households during an important stage of the customer lifecycle.

Mover Activity Remains Elevated Through the Summer

Mover activity typically follows housing transactions and relocation planning with a lag, as home purchases, rental agreements, and moving preparations ultimately translate into completed moves.

Recent mover activity illustrates how volumes have shifted throughout 2026:

  • August 2026: 54,194
  • July 2026: 53,862
  • June 2026: 55,579
  • May 2026: 38,375
  • April 2026: 45,270
  • March 2026: 38,419
  • February 2026: 26,204
  • January 2026: 47,473

After surging in June, national mover activity has remained above 53,000 households for three consecutive months, demonstrating sustained relocation activity throughout the summer.

August was also approximately 7.8% lower than August 2025, when 58,775 mover households were recorded. Despite this year-over-year difference, August 2026 remained one of the strongest months of the year for completed household moves.

Ontario Continues to Lead National Mover Activity

Canada’s largest provinces continued to account for the majority of mover households recorded in August:

  • Ontario: 26,222 (+3.9% MoM)
  • Quebec: 8,920 (-0.5% MoM)
  • Alberta: 7,459 (-8.1% MoM)
  • British Columbia: 7,052 (-1.1% MoM)

Ontario accounted for approximately 48% of all mover households recorded nationally in August, maintaining its position as Canada’s largest mover market.

Ontario also recorded its second consecutive month of growth, increasing from 25,102 households in June to 25,237 in July and 26,222 in August.

Quebec and British Columbia remained relatively stable compared with July, while Alberta declined approximately 8% after recording strong growth  during the previous month.

Provincial Trends Were Mixed in August

While national mover activity was essentially unchanged from July, provincial results varied considerably.

Notable month-over-month increases included:

  • Nova Scotia: +45%
  • Prince Edward Island: +23%
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: +13%
  • New Brunswick: +9%
  • Ontario: +4%

Meanwhile, several provinces recorded declines:

  • Manitoba: -16%
  • Alberta: -8%
  • Saskatchewan: -6%
  • British Columbia: -1%
  • Quebec: essentially flat (-0.5%)

The sharp increases recorded in some Atlantic provinces occurred from smaller overall household volumes, but they nevertheless demonstrate that relocation patterns can vary substantially by region even when the national total remains stable.

For marketers, these regional differences reinforce the value of using current geographic mover data rather than relying solely on national trends.

What This Means for Marketers

August’s results suggest that Canada’s summer mover opportunity remained strong even as the traditional peak moving period began to wind down.

More than 54,000 Canadian households were identified as having recently moved during the month.

Recent movers are actively establishing their households and may be making purchasing decisions related to:

  • Furniture and home furnishings
  • Internet, utilities, and telecommunications
  • Insurance and financial services
  • Home improvement and renovation projects
  • Local retail and service providers

Unlike pre-movers, who are still planning and researching their relocation, new movers have completed their move and are actively establishing new routines, purchasing habits, and service relationships.

For organizations leveraging a Canadian Consumer Database New Mover Household Mailing List, this creates an opportunity to reach consumers during a critical period when many household purchasing and provider decisions are still being made.

Bottom Line

Canada recorded
54,194 mover households in August 2026, representing a slight 0.6% increase from July and marking the third consecutive month with more than 53,000 completed household moves.

Ontario continued to lead the country and recorded another month of growth, while Quebec and British Columbia remained relatively stable. At the same time, several Atlantic provinces experienced notable increases in mover activity.

As the summer moving season transitions into fall, Canada’s new mover audience continues to provide marketers with a substantial opportunity to connect with recently relocated consumers while new purchasing habits and service relationships are being established.
