May Business Activity Returns to Typical Levels

Canada recorded 38,375 mover households in May 2026, following April’s strong performance of 45,270 movers.

While activity moderated from April’s peak, mover volumes remain significantly above February levels and continue to reflect a healthy spring relocation market across Canada.

Spring Relocations Remain Well Above Early-Year Levels

Mover activity naturally follows the housing market with a lag, as home sales, rental agreements, and relocation plans convert into completed moves.

Recent mover activity illustrates this progression:

  • January 2026: 47,473
  • February 2026: 26,204
  • March 2026: 38,419
  • April 2026: 45,270
  • May 2026: 38,375

Although May declined from April’s unusually strong total, activity remains 46% higher than February and closely aligns with March levels. This suggests that the spring moving season remains active even as activity begins to normalize from its peak.

The broader trend continues to point toward a robust relocation market heading into the summer months.

Canada’s largest provinces continue to account for the majority of mover activity:

  • Ontario: 18,327 (-7% MoM)
  • Quebec: 8,022 (+0.4% MoM)
  • Alberta: 5,198 (-16% MoM)
  • British Columbia: 4,233 (-43% MoM)

Ontario remains the country’s largest mover market, accounting for nearly 48% of all mover households recorded in May.

Quebec was one of the few major provinces to maintain growth, posting a modest increase over April and demonstrating continued strength in completed relocations.

British Columbia experienced the largest pullback among major provinces after recording exceptionally strong mover activity in April.

Regional Activity Shows Mixed Results

Momentum is widespread across the country, with most provinces showing strong gains:

  • Manitoba: +46%

  • Nova Scotia: +19%

  • Newfoundland & Labrador: +93%

  • Prince Edward Island: +30%

Some smaller provinces show typical month-to-month volatility, but the national trend is clear: mover activity is accelerating as peak season approaches.

Taken together, the data suggests that mover activity remains healthy nationwide despite easing from April’s high-water mark

Why This Matters for Marketers

Movers remain one of the highest-intent consumer audiences available.

These households have already relocated and are actively making purchasing decisions related to:

  • Furniture and home furnishings
  • Internet, utilities, and telecommunications
  • Insurance and financial services
  • Home improvement and renovation projects
  • Local retail and service providers

Unlike pre-movers, who are still planning and researching, movers are actively establishing their new households and making immediate purchasing decisions.

This creates a valuable opportunity for brands to engage consumers during one of the most responsive stages of the customer journey.
