After months of grim business formation trends, July brought a welcome shift. According to Cleanlist data, 26,262 new businesses were created in Canada last month—up 47.7% from June’s total of 17,777. It’s the strongest showing since January and a much-needed jolt of activity during an otherwise sluggish year.
Even more encouraging: business closures dropped sharply, with just 14,999 closures recorded—the lowest monthly total since October 2024.
That puts July’s net business gain at +11,263, a strong reversal from June’s -24,839 net loss. While one month doesn’t make a trend, this bounce could mark a turning point.
What’s Behind the Turnaround?
It’s hard to say for certain, but possible drivers include:
- Seasonal momentum, with many entrepreneurs launching ahead of the fall
- Delayed incorporations from earlier in the year finally processing
- A possible uptick in confidence among small business founders

A Look Back
July’s numbers stand in sharp contrast to the previous two months. In May, only 9,964 new businesses were created while 37,169 shut down, resulting in a net loss of over 27,000 businesses. June wasn’t much better, with 17,777 new businesses and a staggering 42,616 closures, yielding another net loss of nearly 25,000. But July turned the tide—new business creation jumped to 26,262 while closures fell to just 14,999, delivering a net gain of 11,263 businesses. That’s a positive swing of more than 38,000 compared to the previous month.
