March Business Activity Rebounds, But Closures Remain Elevated

Canada recorded 11,296 new businesses in March 2026, up sharply from 5,986 in February, signaling a +89% month-over-month increase in new business formation.

At the same time, 40,388 businesses closed, down significantly from 73,421 in February, but still well above new business creation.

New Business Formation Rebounds from February Lows

After a slow start to the year, March shows encouraging momentum:

  • January 2026: 5,450

  • February 2026: 5,986

  • March 2026: 11,296

That’s nearly a doubling of new business activity month-over-month, suggesting renewed confidence or delayed starts coming to market.

However, March still trails stronger periods from 2025, indicating that entrepreneurial activity has not fully normalized.

Closures Drop, But Remain High

Closures pulled back meaningfully in March:

  • January 2026: 8,754
  • February 2026: 73,421 (spike)
  • March 2026: 40,388

While the February spike appears to be an outlier (likely timing or reporting-related), even March levels remain historically elevated.

Net Business Growth Remains Negative

Despite the rebound in new business creation, the gap remains significant:

  • New businesses: 11,296
  • Closures: 40,388
  • Net change: –29,092

This marks another month where more businesses exited than entered the market, continuing a pattern of contraction.

What This Means for Marketers and Growth Teams

This environment creates a split reality:

On one hand:

  • New businesses represent fresh demand and new customer opportunities
  • Early-stage companies are often highly responsive to outreach

On the other:

  • Elevated closures signal economic pressure and churn risk
  • Existing customers—especially SMBs—may be more fragile than they appear

Smart teams adjust by:

  • Prioritizing high-quality prospect targeting
  • Monitoring customer health more closely
  • Moving faster to capture new business early

Bottom Line

March shows a
clear rebound in new business formation, but the broader picture remains mixed.

With closures still outpacing new entrants, the market is active—but unstable.

That makes precision, timing, and data quality more important than ever.
