After two straight months of steep declines, new business creation in Canada bounced back in April. A total of 21,154 new businesses were registered—up 22% from March’s count of 17,392.
At the same time, business closures slowed considerably. Just 11,543 businesses were removed from the active register in April, down nearly 71% from the unusual spike in February and well below the March count of 39,844.
The result: a healthy net gain of 9,611 businesses in April.
While still below the highs seen in January and last fall, April’s growth signals a return to stability—and potentially, renewed momentum—as we move further into Q2.
