Why was the number of deaths the lowest it’s been since COVID?
The last time we saw death rates this low was during COVID-19 when social distancing was in order, mask-wearing was established and hand hygiene was all the rage. Because citizens were keeping their distance to not spread the disease, rates decreased and illnesses were less likely to spread.
In June of 2024, one could assume that death rates are low due to increased health awareness, more proactive and preventative healthcare measures, a strengthened healthcare system—with hospitals almost, if not back to normal—and an uptick in outdoor activities. Post-COVID, Canadians have also been exposed to more mental health awareness and support, potentially aiding in fewer mental health crises and deaths. These factors, among others, likely contributed to the observed decrease in deaths among Canadians.
