July Business Formation Rebounds While Closures Remain Elevated

Canada recorded 10,382 new businesses in July 2026, up from 6,490 in June.

This represents a 60.0% month-over-month increase in new business formation, marking a strong rebound after several months of more moderate activity. Excluding April’s exceptional reporting spike, July recorded the highest level of new business registrations seen in 2026.

Organizations using a Canadian business database can use July’s new business start-up and closure data to identify high-potential prospects while staying ahead of changing market conditions.

New Business Formation Strengthens in July

Following April’s extraordinary spike, new business registrations have continued to normalize while showing renewed momentum during July:

  • July 2026: 10,382
  • June 2026: 6,490
  • May 2026: 5,753
  • April 2026: 91,359
  • March 2026: 11,296
  • February 2026: 5,986
  • January 2026: 5,450

July’s increase suggests that business formation strengthened considerably following the softer activity recorded during May and June. While still below March’s level and far below April’s reporting anomaly, the rebound points to healthy entrepreneurial activity across Canada.

Reported Business Closures Remain Elevated

Reported business closures remained high during July:

  • July 2026: 36,632
  • June 2026: 36,700
  • May 2026: 16,487
  • April 2026: 38,215
  • March 2026: 40,388
  • February 2026: 73,421
  • January 2026: 8,754

July recorded 36,632 reported business closures, representing a slight 0.2% month-over-month decrease from June.

Although closures remained significantly below February’s exceptional peak, turnover continued at an elevated level compared to earlier in the year, reinforcing the importance of maintaining accurate and up-to-date business data.

Business Creation Continues to Trail Reported Closures

Despite the strong rebound in business formation, reported closures continued to outpace new registrations:

  • New businesses: 10,382
  • Reported closures: 36,632
  • Net change: -26,250

While July recorded negative net business growth for the third consecutive month, the gap narrowed considerably as new business formation increased.

What This Means for Marketers and Growth Teams

July’s rebound in business creation presents encouraging opportunities for organizations focused on B2B customer acquisition.

On the opportunity side:

  • New business registrations increased significantly month over month.
  • July recorded the strongest month for business formation since March, excluding April’s one-time reporting spike.
  • Newly incorporated businesses remain highly receptive to outreach during their earliest stages of growth.

At the same time:

  • Reported business closures remained elevated.
  • Business turnover continues to create both acquisition opportunities and data quality challenges.
  • Keeping prospect databases current is essential as companies continue to enter and exit the market.

Smart strategy adjustments:

  • Maintain ongoing outreach to newly incorporated businesses.
  • Prioritize industries and regions experiencing stronger business formation.
  • Use high-quality business intelligence and data enrichment to improve targeting accuracy.
  • Engage prospects early, while purchasing decisions and vendor relationships are still being established.

Bottom Line

July 2026 saw a meaningful rebound in new business formation, with registrations increasing
60% compared to June.

Although reported business closures remained elevated, stronger business creation narrowed the gap between new registrations and closures, suggesting continued entrepreneurial momentum across Canada.

For marketers and growth teams, Canada’s steady pipeline of newly established businesses continues to provide valuable prospecting opportunities, particularly for organizations that can identify and engage new companies early in their growth journey.
